UFC 327 takes place tonight inside the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida, as Light Heavyweight contenders Jiri Prochazka and Carlos Ulberg collide in what promises to be one of the most exciting championship bouts of the year.
Prochazka is one of the most experienced and battle-tested fighters in the Light Heavyweight division. With nearly 40 professional bouts on his record, the 33-year-old has been competing at the highest level for a very long time and continues to show remarkable longevity. In the last decade, the only man to defeat him was Alex Pereira, widely regarded as one of the greatest strikers in UFC history. Known as The Czech Samurai, there is real craft and intelligence behind his seemingly unpredictable offensive style, which is precisely why he finds himself on the right side of stoppages far more often than not. Facing a disciplined counter striker in Ulberg, measured and calculated aggression will be the key to success for Prochazka. While his durability is well documented, charging forward recklessly into Ulberg’s best punches would be a dangerous gamble. At the same time, being overly cautious cost him rounds in his previous outing, meaning he must find the perfect balance between patience and pressure. One of Prochazka’s most effective recent tactics has been drawing out strikes from his opponent, slipping to the outside, and then launching into his trademark high-volume offense. Being aggressive at the right moments while feinting effectively will be critical to his success here.
Prochazka also has opportunities to attack after kicks, particularly by sticking opponents with front kicks before stepping down into combinations, as well as returning fire immediately after blocking or checking incoming kicks. These off-rhythm moments make it significantly harder for opponents to time their counters. Ulberg is a highly intelligent counter striker who can be extremely frustrating for both fans and opponents to deal with. He is perfectly comfortable controlling distance with his lead hand and long kicks, and carries the power and timing to make opponents pay dearly for trying to pressure through his range. One of the clearest paths to victory against Prochazka is targeting his wide stance with outside low kicks. Switching stances frequently to match Prochazka’s movement while consistently attacking the lead leg could go a long way in slowing down his blitzes and making his offensive patterns more predictable.
