Match Overview
WWE Friday Night SmackDown returns this week from the Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky for one of its most important episodes in recent memory. Tonight’s show serves as the final episode before Saturday Night’s Main Event XLIV on May 23 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with Clash in Italy also looming on May 31, making the stakes incredibly high on the Blue Brand tonight.
Last week’s SmackDown delivered massive storyline developments, as Gunther defeated Royce Keys to officially become the Number One Contender for the Undisputed WWE Championship, before Cody Rhodes made a powerful statement by laying out the Ring General at the close of the show. With their Clash in Italy showdown now confirmed, tonight is expected to bring further developments between these two rivals.
The only officially confirmed match for tonight is a singles contest between Talla Tonga and Shinsuke Nakamura, born out of a violent backstage assault last week when Talla ambushed Nakamura as he attempted to speak with Tama Tonga. The history between Nakamura and the Tonga family runs deep, with both men sharing ties to New Japan Pro Wrestling earlier in their careers, adding extra layers of intensity to their upcoming clash.
Internal tensions within the MFTs continue to simmer, with Tama Tonga’s loyalties increasingly coming into question. Solo Sikoa has repeatedly insisted that Tama is his right-hand man, yet left him to fend for himself against Damian Priest, fueling widespread speculation that Tama may be considering a split from the faction. Tonight’s SmackDown could be the night those tensions finally boil over.
